ハロウィン
１０月３１日はハロウィンです。日本でハロウィンがどのように行われているかは知りませんが、ここアメリカでは子供たちにとって、とても大きなイベントの１つです。かぼちゃがいたるところに見られ、子供たちは仮装して「 Trick or Treating」をします。そして、多くの家はお化け屋敷みたいにデコレーションされています。
We’re coming upon Halloween. Halloween is October 31. I don’t know what happens in Japan during Halloween, but in the US, Halloween is a big event for children under about 14. Pumpkins are everywhere, kids dress up in costumes and go Trick or Treating (more explanation to follow) and many houses are decorated in spooky décor. I wish I could tell you how this strange holiday came into such prominence, but I just settle with showing some pictures and telling about what’s happening.
ハロウィン用のかぼちゃは秋口に収穫されて、ハロウィンの時期に合わせて大量にスーパーなどに並びます。子供たちが小さかったころ、車で２５マイル行ったところのかぼちゃ畑に行き自分たちのかぼちゃを畑の中から探していました。下の写真はその時のかぼちゃたちです。
First, the pumpkins. Pumpkins are ready to be picked during the early fall and have been integrated into Halloween. When the kids were younger, we used to drive 25 miles to a farm which allowed you to have a hayride out to the far pumpkin patch where you could wonder around and find your own pumpkin. Below is a picture of pumpkins in the field.
お気に入りのかぼちゃを見つけたらそれを家に持ち帰り「Jack O Lantern」をつくります。
先週末、娘の友達とその家族もみんなで「Jack O Lantern」をつくりました。かぼちゃの中身、主に種をくり抜いたらそれをとっておきます。机の上の大きなタッパーに入っているのがその種です。
Once you pick out your pumpkin, you take it home and turn it into a Jack O Lantern. This past weekend we went to a pumpkin carving party with many families from our kids schools. This is my daughter and her 6th grade friends scooping the gooey seeds out of the middle. My daughter is hiding behind the girl in the blue and white striped shirt. The container in the middle is holding all the pumpkins seeds.
私の妻はこの種をきれいに洗ってぬめりを取り除き、スパイスで味付けしてオーブンで焼きます。それは私たちの美味しいスナックになります。
妻もかぼちゃをくり抜いています。彼女はセサミ・ストリートのアーニーを作っています。
Libby, my wife, took these seeds, rinsed off the slimy stuff, added spices and roasted the seeds for us to eat as snacks. Here is Libby carving her pumpkin. She carved Ernie, a famous TV puppet from the show “Sesame Street”
私は４５分ほどかかって、スター・ウォーズのジェダイ・マスター「ヨーダ」をつくりました！
Here I am with my finished pumpkin. I used a pattern of Yoda, the Star Wars Jedi Master. I worked on it for nearly 45 minutes with a little serrated saw.
かぼちゃが出来上がったら、それを家に持って帰って、夕暮れに中にろうそくを入れて明りをともします。今年のルーランド家のかぼちゃたちです。（画像が悪いことをお詫びします。）
After the pumpkins are carved, we brought them home and put a light inside and put them outside after dark. Here’s the total output from the Ruland clan under light. I apologize for the bad lighting, but hopefully you can see enough.

子供たちの最大の楽しみ「Trick or Treating」がいよいよ始まります。子供たちはコスチュームに着替えて、キャンディを入れるバッグを持ちます。
As the big night gets closer, the kids are work on perfecting their costumes for Trick or Treating. Here’s a few shots of recent costumes kids wore during Halloween.

子供たちはみんな外へ出て近隣の家を周ります。そして、ドアベルを鳴らし「Trick or Treat」と叫びます。そして、彼らはキャンディを集めて家から家へと歩いていきます。いつも、子供たちは沢山のキャンディを手に入れます。
The kids all go out into the neighbor and Trick or Treat. The kids go up to a house, ring the doorbell and yell “Trick or Treat.” Then they collect some candy and move on the next house. Generally, my kids from home with a lot of candy.

昨年、とある家では前庭にトラックがひっくり返っていて、フロントガラスから首なしのマネキンが突出していました。その光景は子供たちにとってショッキングで怖すぎました。。。
Many of the houses along the way are decorate as shown below. Last year, a truck was tipped over in one front yard with decapitated mannequin protruding through the windshield. The scene was too scary for many of the kids in our group…
去年、私は娘の学校のハロウィン・パーティを企画しましたが、その時「血と内臓のポット」の作り方を調べて、それをつくりました。
子供たちはこのべとべとのポットの底に隠されている１ドル硬貨をとります。多くの男の子たちはそれをためらったのに対して女の子たちは何の躊躇も無しに全員このポットに手を突っ込んで硬貨をゲットしていたことに私は驚きました！
Last year, Libby and I were in charge of the school Halloween party for my daughter’s class. I did a little research and made a pot of blood and guts. It was a variation of dunking for apples. Each kid came up to the pot, put their hands into the goo and pulled a silver dollar from the bottom. I was surprised that all the girls put their hands into this mess, while only a handful of the boys did.
