日曜日のフリーマーケット
前回のブログ同様にルーランド家、定番の家族イベントについて今回も書こうと思います。
「Nate’s Swap N Shop」というフリーマーケットはNate Drive in Theater で毎週行われています。普段はドライブインシアターとして使われているスペースがフリーマーケットになります。
妻の両親は毎週日曜の朝、必ずここを訪れます。私たちも娘が産まれたあたりから彼らと同じく毎週通うようになりました。私は娘がまだ産まれて３～４週間くらいの時にここに来たのを覚えています。その時、彼女はまだ小さすぎてずっと泣いていました。。
私はこの「Nate’s Swop N Shop」について書こうとしていましたが、写真無しでは説明ができないと思い、先日、ブログ用に撮影をしてきました。
今回のブログは写真が沢山あって、読んでて分かりやすいと思います！
In keeping with the family traditions theme started in July, I decided to write a blog about another family tradition – Nate’s Swop N Shop. A Swop N Shop is a place where people bring goods for others to purchase. Nate converted a Drive In theater (an outdoor movie theater with a 30’ tall screen) into a weekend spot. Libby’s parents go often on Sunday mornings and we started going with them shortly after my daughter was born. In fact, I remember taking Ellie when she was about 3 or 4 weeks old. I remember a lady screaming at us that she was too young to be out and about.
When I thought of this idea, I was struggling with how to describe what a Swop N Shop is, so I decided to let pictures tell the story. So here’s a few pictures and I hope they tell a story….

息子のヘンリー、娘のエリーそれに妻のお母さんとお父さんです。
This is my family – my wife is missing – which consists of Henry, age 8, Ellie, age 11, Papa and Mimi (my wife’s parents). They are standing at the entrance.

My wife Libby and the kids are looking checking out the wares. You can see the vendor’s vehicle on the right. The vendors set up their “shops” every day.
自分と娘の姿が鏡の中に見えます。私は鏡の隣の「Emergency Evacuation Plan」（緊急時避難計画のサイン）が気になりました！こんなものまで売っているとはユニークです。でも、いつ、これが必要になるか分からないですね！

息子の買い物です。
「Scooby Doo」は息子のお気に入りのアニメです。彼はこのお皿とカップを２５セントで購入していました。彼は７５セントから２５セントに値切っていました！
Scooby Doo is Henry’s favorite cartoon character and he purchased a plate with matching cup for $0.25. He negotiated the vendor down from $0.75.
この改造自転車を眺めていたら、ベンダーがやってきて、これはちゃんと動くから試乗するように勧めてきたが、私は怪我したく無いので遠慮しました。。
The man assured me that his motorized bicycle worked great and offered me a test drive, but I was unwilling to pay $25 for the bike.
娘の買い物。彼女はネコが好きです。そして、私たちは（多分、今度ブログに書くけど）ニューヨークに旅行に行きました！その思い出にとカレンダーを２個、１ドルで買いました。
２０１１年は既に８月も過ぎ去ろうとしてるのですが、彼女はお構いなしです。
Ellie loves kittens and we were just back from our summer holiday in New York City (perhaps the subject of a blog in the near future.) She was unconcerned that 7 of the months of the calendars had already passed. I think she paid $1 for both.
そして、彼女はスーパーヒーローになるべきかどうかを考えていました。
悩んだあげく彼女はヒーローへの道を選び、マントだけを購入することにしました！

She eventually passed on the masks and decided that if she was to become a super hero, she would use only a cape.
おなかが空いたらお決まりの「タコ・トラック」があります。美味しいメキシカンが食べれます！
If you get hungry during your shopping spree, Nate’s has several options for lunch time fare including this travelling taco truck.
動物のはく製を売っている人がいました。驚くことに彼はこれらの動物を実際に狩りをして、それを彼の親戚がはく製にしているそうです！
１つ５０ドルと破格だったので、私はこのビーバーかターキーを買おうと思いましたが、妻からＮＧが出ました。。。
The man selling these stuffed animals had trapped the beaver himself and shot the turkey. His uncle, the taxidermist, stuffed them both. He was asking $50 for each. I tried to buy them but my wife said no.
本当はリアルなはく製を手に入れたかったが、私はそれに似た良い物を見つけました！オラウータンとゴリラの頭です！
今度、息子の誕生会「ジャングル誕生日パーティ」をやるので、それの良いデコレーションにもなります。２つで５ドルでした！
So instead of stuffed turkey and beaver, I bought stuffed orangutan and gorilla heads. Henry was having a jungle birthday party the next weekend and these seemed like good decorations for the party. I think I paid $5 for the pair.
この日はとても暑かったので息子は巨大な扇風機の前で涼んでいました。
The day was very hot – it was over 37 C on this day.
多くのベンダーは扱うものに統一性があるのに対して、このベンダーはありとあらゆるものを扱っています。つりざおからプーさん、またはバービー人形まで。。。
Many of the vendors have themes and all their products seem to fit within a category. This vendor, however, had variety of themes from Winnie the Pooh to axes to fishing poles to Barbies…
私はゴルフがとても好きです。しかし、この超ヴィンテージクラブは使いこなせそうにありません。。
I like to golf as I think I wrote in my profile, but I’m not sure how well I could do with this vintage set.
このようなフリーマーケットはアメリカではすごくポピュラーなもので、おそらく日本よりも盛んだと思います。あなたの周りでは非日常かもしれませんが、私は私のブログで身近な平凡な日常を語ることで、あなたにもアメリカを疑似体験してもらいたいと願っています！
