ルーランド家の独立記念日。
アメリカの独立記念日として一般的に知られているのは7月4日です。1776年以来、独立を記念するアメリカを代表する祝日の１つですこの日は一般的に花火、パレード、バーベキュー、フェア（移動式遊園地）、ピクニック、コンサート、野球などをやって過ごします。
Ruland Family Independence Day Traditions
Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.
私の妻の実家はカーニー・ミズーリと呼ばれるミズーリ州でも特に田舎の方にあります。 その町は人口が約1万人で、西部劇では悪名高い無法者、Jesse Jamesの出身地です。 毎年、7月3日に壮大な花火大会が開催されます。町のみんなが沢山集まります。その数は 約3万人ぐらいの人々が花火を見に来ると思います。 しかし、 公園はとても小さく入口も１つしかないのです。
In my family, we have developed several traditions associated with July 4th. My wife's parents live a rural Missouri city called Kearney Missouri. Kearney is home to about 10,000 people and the birth place of the notorious outlaw, Jesse James. Every year, the city of Kearney hosts a grand fireworks show on July 3rd. People from all around come to watch. I think they estimate 30,000 people come to the park to watch. The park is fairly small with only one entrance.
この10年間、家族全員で毎年、花火を見に妻の実家に行きます。私の家族は、妻のリビー、１１歳の娘エリー、８歳の息子ヘンリーです。 そして、おかあさんはいつもツナサンド、デビルド・エッグ、そしてチョコレート・チップ・クッキーを用意してくれます。 私はツナが大好物で、息子のヘンリーもそれが好きです。 花火が始まるまで子供たちは空気が詰まったふわふわで巨大な滑り台で遊んだり、ジャンプ・ハウスの中でとび跳ねたりします。町の消防士は 大きなトラックから子供たちに無料でスイカを配ります。 暗くなると花火が始まります。およそ２５分ほど打ち上げられます。花火のにおいをかぐことができるくらい近くに座って見ることができます。
For the past 10 years, my family (my wife - Libby, 11 year old daughter -Ellie and 8 year old son - Henry) all go to the fireworks with Libby's mom and her husband. Every year her mom makes tuna fish sandwiches, deviled eggs and chocolate chip cookies. Please see in my profile that tuna is my favorite food. Henry likes them too. Before the fireworks, the kids play on giant inflatable slides and obstacle course. Kearney fireman hand out free watermelon from the back of a big flatbed truck filled with ice. At dark, the fireworks start and last for 20-25 minutes. Everyone sits close enough to smell the fireworks.
花火が終わると素早く人込みをかきわけ公園を出ようとします。まれに5～10分程度で抜け出せることがありますが、大概は車にたどり着くまで結構な時間を要します。私と子供たちはいつの頃か妻の実家の農場でテントを張って眠る習慣ができました。私はこれがいつから始まったかはよく覚えていません。１年で最も暑い夜に、それも近所の家では独立記念日の花火が夜通し 鳴り響いているので、テントで寝るにはあまり適していませんが、私たちはいつもテントに秘密のスナック持ち込んで子供たちとそれを楽しみます。マシュマロやキャンディとか。
After the show, we all rush to our cars so we can beat the crowd out of the park. Sometimes we win and make it out in 5-10 minutes. Other times we are not so lucky. We go back to my in-laws house where the kids and I sleep in a tent somewhere out on the farm. I'm not sure how this started, but sleeping in a tent on one of the notorious hottest days with neighborly fireworks going off all night was probably not the best idea ever had, but we go with it now. We always have secret snacks in our tents - marshmallows, candy and anything else we can scrounge up.
翌朝、私たちはテントで目覚めると、義母は朝食にブルーベリーパンケーキとベーコンを焼いてくれます。それから、ブルーベリーを摘みに車で出かけます。ブルーベリーの木は6～7フィートぐらいで、ベリーはその木に沢山なっています。私たちはバスケットにブルーベリーをつみます。その場で食べるのは無料ですが、持って帰る場合だけお金がかかります。この農園のオーナーはとても感じが良く、いつもおしゃべりをしにやってきます。私と子どもたちはいつも彼が鯉を飼っている池に行き餌を与えます。数匹はとても大きくて色鮮やかな鯉ですが、ほとんどは単色で小さいものです。タカやサギが時々やって来て、鯉を食べてしまうらしいです。私たちはいつも約10ポンドのベリーを摘みます。5ポンドは自分たちのため、残りの５ポンドは義母に持って帰ります。
In the morning, we wake up and Mimi (my mother-in-law) fixes blueberry pancakes and bacon for breakfast. We then pile 6 of us into a vehicle and drive further into the country to pick blueberries. Blueberries grow on bushes about 6-7 feet tall with berries mixed from the ground to the top of the bush. We all have our own bucket and you only have to pay for the ones you pick - the ones you can eat are free. The man who owns the bushes is very nice and always comes by for a chat. The kids and I take a little walk to a pond where he has koi fish stocked. Usually we feed them. He has a few big ones, but mostly average size and color. He tells us that the hawks and herons come along and eat a lot of them. We normally pick about 10 pounds of berries - 5 for us and 5 for my in-laws.
ブルーベリーをつんだ後、私たちは町に行きランチできるレストランを探します。この日はだいたいのお店がクローズしています。この日もだいたいいつも開いているバーベキュー・レストランに入ろうと思ったのですが、今年はそこもクローズしていました。そして、私たちはリッチモンドでピザを食べました。
After picking, we drive through about four or five little central western Missouri towns looking for a restaurant that is open for lunch. Most of the places are closed for the holiday, but we have found a good little barbeque place that is usually open. This year, it was closed and we had pizza in Richmond.

This is a picture of last fourth of July. We ate in a little restaurant that looked like it was someone's house.
私たちはいつも昼食後には実家にすぐ戻ります。 しかし、数年前、私のJeepが壊れてしまったときがあります。当然、すべての車屋はクローズしてたので、大変困りましたが、運よく私たちは実家の農場の近くにいて、何とか家にたどり着くことができました。
We usually head back to the farm after lunch. A couple of years ago, my Jeep died and left us stranded at 5 pm on a holiday where all the garages are closed. Luckily we were close to my in-laws farm and managed to make it home.
その夜、妻の兄は、外で料理するためのバーベキュー・セットと家庭用花火を持ち込み花火大会をひらくので20 人ほどを招待します。私たちはみんな、ウシガエルの鳴き声を聞きながら農場の池のほとりに座って日が沈むのを待ちながら夕食をとります。ホットドッグにチリ、それにハマグリを焼いたり、なんでもあります。 私は花火が苦手なので子供たちにとっては唯一自分の手で花火を持って楽しむ機会となります。ここでの注意点はそこらじゅうに牛の糞が落ちているので暗闇でそれを踏まないようにしなくてはなりません。間もなく花火大会がスタートします。
That night, my wife's brother likes to shoot off his own fireworks and invites 15-20 people out to the farm for a cook-out on an open fire and our own fireworks show. We all sit by a farm pond - complete with croaking bull frogs - and have dinner while waiting for the sun to go down. We have anything from hot dogs, bratwursts, chili, or a clam boil. I generally don't like fireworks so my kids' only chance to shoot off their own is during the time before their uncle shoots off his. You have to be on the look-out for cow manure, otherwise you might step in something not very pleasant. At dark, the fireworks start again and Kevin, my brother-in-law, shoots off an impressive amount of fireworks into the air.
花火の後、暗闇の中でできるだけきれいに片づけ、高速道路を通り家に戻ります。私の家族はそこまで多くの家族行事はやらないのですが、この先、私の子供が成長してもこの独立記念日にはここで花火をしてテントで寝られると良いなあと思いました。
After the fireworks, we try to clean up our mess in the dark and drive though the pasture back to the road and highway back home. I never had many family traditions while I was growing up, so I don't know what impact these traditions will have on my children as they grow-up, but I think some of these times will stay with them forever. So long for now.
